Special guided tour of the unique landscape surrounding the largely Georgian house, once owned by the Savery family. The Devon Rural Archive's resident archaeologist, Abi Gray, will lead our exploration of the lawns, terraces, medieval walled gardens and the remains of the 17thcentury Italianate water theatre with its associated water gardens which are thought to be unique survivals in the UK. 2019 is the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the Devon Rural Archive at Shilstone by the Fenwick Charitable Trust.
Coffee at 11.00am, followed by a short introduction to the DRA and the history of the site by Abi before she leads us on a one and a half tour of the grounds. Please note that the return ascent is steep, but a small element of the tour could be avoided. The morning will conclude about 1.00pm. There are many good pubs in the area for lunch. The DRA Library will remain open until 3.00pm.
