Originally developed by the Ashburners to display National Collections of wild-origin Birch and Alder, the Gardens now cover 18 acres, to include a newly planted extension of the original arboretum and also wildflower meadows and woodland. The original Kenneth Ashburner arboretum and water garden is 5 acres and is part of this. Ken Ashburner began planting the gardens in 1971 with seed raised from wild-origin seed from Canada, USA, Europe, India, the Himalayas and Japan.
The Gardens hold a Plant Heritage National Collection of Birch and Alder and are enhanced by an annual Summer Sculpture Exhibition and other planting.
Stone Lane Gardens is an RHS Partner Garden and is officially a Botanic Garden registered with Kew.
