Plantsmans garden of great merit created by Dr. Smart since1949 on an unpropitious site steeply sloping and exposed to cold sea winds. Dr Smart lived in Marwood Hill, a pretty late Georgian stuccoed house until he built a new house which he named Marwood Hill; the Georgian house was then renamed Marwood House. Marwood contains a vast collection of plants from all over the world. The stream which flows through the large collection of fine trees and shrubs, all clearly labelled. The hillside quarry contains a rock garden. The garden is full of good specimens camellias which make a garden has been dammed to give three broad ponds and a stretch of bog with a wide range of water loving plants. There are generous plantings along the stream, and a splendid display in the spring together with drifts of bulbs, flowering trees and rhododendrons.
