Description:

A rare example of a completely unaltered country house of the 1890s.  Eclectic mixture of of free Jacobean and Classical style with some Art Noveau detail.  The former seat of the Beres, rebuilt in 1892-4 for Charles Digby Harrod, son of the founder of the Knightsbridge store, following his retirement in 1891.  The long rhododendron lined drive curves up to a large mansion with vaguely Jacobean gables: a weedy late C19 frontage in pale yellow brick with incongruous red brick chimneys sprouting from the slate roof (Pevsner).  The conservatory porch is attractive.
