Peamore Park to the west of the A379 has been added to the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England at Grade II following DGT’s successful application to Historic England. The reasons for designation are its date and rarity, that it is a good example of a Picturesque country house landscape using the natural topography, that it forms a group with Peamore House, lodge, keeper’s cottage, arch and steps into the Rock pleasure ground; also contemporary accounts, sketches and paintings evidence how the landscape was experienced.
Peamore Park is just to the south of Exeter with the original estate bisected by the A379. The area to the east of the road has not been included in the designation; now in divided ownership it comprises the walled kitchen garden, farm and large fishpond with associated designed walks. The Trust’s application was the result of research into the house, landscape and their ownership over some four centuries, which is described in an article in the Trust’s last Journal that can be read here. The Trust is delighted that Historic England has recognised the significance of Peamore.
