In this talk Jonathan Lovie will be exploring what characterised the Arts and Crafts garden. It was a style which sought a more naturalistic aesthetic in reaction to the high Victorian formality of most of the nineteenth century particularly with respect to planting design. The great partnership of Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll, along with designers like Thomas Mawson and Harold Peto were amongst its exponents. The talk will be an excellent prelude to the visit to Coleton Fishacre in the summer, and possibly another Devon Arts and Crafts garden. Jonathan Lovie is a garden historian, landscape consultant and DGT member; he is well-known to many members and has extensive knowledge of the gardens of the south west. (Image: Wood, South Tawton.
