- Walled Garden
A late twentieth and twenty-first century garden created by Alasdair Forbes around a Devon farmhouse and beyond in a Devon coombe
Described as ‘probably the most significant new garden to have been made in Britain in recent decades.’ The 32 acres of gardens have been created since 1992 out of a Devon coombe stretching from a Devon farmstead. Its creator, Alasdair Forbes, has been infuenced by myth, literature, poetry, painting and music. In addition to the enclosed spaces, defined by the farmstead buildings, including the original walled garden, all with a different meaning and atmosphere, there are those enclosed by high hedges of yew and hornbeam. Symbolic rocks, tablets in the ground, standing stones and slates, inscriptions and discrete sculpture are juxtaposed with expansive views across the lake and from the higher walks.
