Description:

In this remote spot William Brewer, Sheriff of Devon, founded a Cistercian abbey In 1201, a daughter house of Forde in Dorset.  A house was built by Elizabeth Simcoe on the site of the abbey.  White merely noted it as a ’pleasant seat’.  Surviving garden features include the abbey fishponds and part of the early C16 gatehouse.
