A talk by Dr Ian Varndell. Burial grounds are important historic landscapes combining physical space with monuments commemorating the lives of those inhumed. The Dissenters' graveyard in Exeter opened in 1748 and when it closed in 1854 almost 2000 people had been buried within its walls. Ian Varndell, a former chair of Devon Gardens Trust and current trustee of the Exeter Dissenter's Graveyard Trust will talk about the history of the burial ground, its conservation in 2014 by EDGT and will illustrate the social history of the site with research conducted on some of the people known to have been buried there.
