Fardel

Small medieval manor house, confusingly altered, owned by the Raleighs from the fourteenth century and the Heles from the seventeenth century.  In 1796 Revd John Swete visited Fardel and described it as ‘an old mansion, of respectable appearance, surrounded by large branching oaks, Sons oj other times ... it never seems to have been possessed of much respectability, on this side were the gardens, fish ponds &c enclosed within a long range of high walls, there is but little left however of its quondam magnificence, just enough to excite regret, that it has gone to utter decay.’  He also noted that the chapel was used for making cider and keeping pigeons.  White (1850) noted that it was then an old farmhouse.  The fish pond survives.  Garden gatepiers with large balls.
