Saltram, near Plymouth, headed the National Trust's annual Valentine's Day 'Flowers in Bloom' count in 2014 with 153 plants in flower. Although we cannot guarantee another floriferous year, we will commence our 2015 garden visits programme with two expert gardeners.
Penny Hammond, former head gardener, will lead a guided tour of the gardens and grounds at Saltram. This will be followed by a talk, "An overview of snowdrop variation" by Matt Bishop. Matt, formerly of the Garden House, has been fascinated by snowdrops since the 1980s and authored the Snowdrop bible in 2012. There could now be over 2500 varieties of Galanthus and there is no-one better informed to talk about their variation.
Tickets £7.50 (members), £9.00 (non-members) to include refreshments on arrival, tour of the garden and talk. Non-members of the National Trust will have to pay the entrance fee prevailing at the date of the visit (currently £5.90). Lunch available for purchase in the Saltram restaurant. Contact Ian Varndell (e. firstname.lastname@example.org ; t. 07769 335506) for details (more information about the house and garden are on the National Trust website - click here) and to book (before Monday 9th February please). The booking form can be downloaded here.
