Devon has a strong tradition of owners designing their own landscapes and gardens, for example the Fortescues at Castle Hill and the Rolles at Bicton, often influenced by other well-known gardens and drawing on contemporary fashion.  There are also a large number of well-known and influential designers, landscape gardeners and architects, who have been involved in the design of the historic landscapes of Devon and their buildings, sometimes the whole estate and sometimes  a small area or remodelling.
